Selenium

Selenium is an essential trace element required by the human body in small amounts. It operates as an antioxidant and in thyroid metabolism. It appears to have other important and positive roles in the body with some studies suggesting it may have anti-cancer properties when taken within safe dosage limits as discussed below.

Where do I get Selenium from?

Selenium is found in a variety of meat and vegetarian sources. The total amount of selenium in vegetarian products will depend heavily on the quantity of selenium in the soil in which the product grew.

As can be seen from the table to the right, Brazil Nuts are so high in Selenium that care is advised that people do not overindulge!

Other than nuts, quantities of Selenium are more modest but also spread across many different foods. Accordingly, people with a balanced diet are likely to get enough Selenium.

However, as discussed below, people who aren't able to maintain a diverse and balanced diet can consider a multivitamin containing Selenium to ensure they obtain enough of this mineral.

An easy way to ensure you get enough Selenium without resorting to supplements is to have a small handful of mixed nuts a day.

Food Selenium (mcg) per 100g - Approx
Brazil Nuts 1900
Other Nuts 420
Tuna 80
Whole Wheat Flour 70
Chicken 60
Pork/Ham 50
Oat Bran 45
Beef 40
Rice 24
Whole Milk 15

How much Selenium do I need?

The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing recommends that:

Healthy adult men intake 70mcg per day

Healthy adult women intake 60cmg per day

Click here for the full report.

There is also an upper limit for zinc intake of 400mcg for healthy adults which is recommended. Excess Selenium can and does cause brittleness and loss of hair and nails, rash, fatigue and gastrointestinal problems, among other problems.

There is however plenty of room between the recommended intake and the upper limit for healthy adults to take recommended dosages without fear.

As with some of the other minerals that have upper recommended limits, it is important to remember that these minerals will become toxic if the upper limit is consistently ignored. People will not develop Selenium toxicity from a single Brazil Nut binge!
